Durham Federation Science

Key Stage 3 Science

Students engage in Science through our newly developed themed curriculum starting. To begin with we take our students on an imaginary ‘Mission to Mars’ where we learn all about the biological factors it would take to sustain life on another planet. Next we look at building a ‘Theme Park’ and the laws of physics that would underpin such a development. We then move on to consider how scientists are working towards ‘Keeping our Planet Alive’ and the environmental chemistry involved. Our students spend a term solving crime as part of the Ushaw Moor "CSI", before working out how they might survive on a "Desert Island". Finally they discuss the ethics and science behind "Designer Babies".

We spend a significant part of Yr9 following a transition programme that equips our students with the skills they will need to be sucessful in their KS4 courses. Then during the summer term all of our Yr9 students are introduced to their KS4 work with some taking their first GCSE Exam in the June of that year.
